Remembering Abigail
In part three of our Valentine’s Day blog series, we are honoring Abigail. Abigail was special to all who knew her, not to mention extremely smart and talented. To honor Abigail and all the happiness, kindness, and love she gave to so many in such a short time, Team Abigail comes together each year for our Reaching for the Cure event to help raise money and awareness for PCRF. Their goal this year is to raise $20,000 for research.
“Owls, butterflies, Greek mythology, Harry Potter, sewing, the color purple, school, strawberries, and cheeseburgers. These are just a few favorites of Abigail Caplan-Jones.
Abigail was born on March 4, 2007, and passed away on May 22nd, 2016 at the age of 9 from Ewings Undifferentiated Sarcoma. In just 9 years Abigail put together a list of accomplishments that gives us a lifetime of pride.
– Hope View Elementary Principal’s Effort Award For Academics in 1st and 3rd grade.
– After a year of homeschooling during chemotherapy treatments she returned to school and passed the gate entrance exam missing only 4 questions on the entire test.
– She finished reading the entire Harry Potter series by the end of her 1st-grade year.
– During treatment she learned to sew making her own Halloween costume, Athena Goddess of Wisdom and War.
– In February 2016 she sewed fabric hearts for the entire 3rd grade class for Valentine’s Day gifts.
– She memorized the entire Greek God family tree
– She learned to ski in Colorado at the age of 4
– At home during her breaks from hospital stays, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments she learned how to ride a bike.
– Also during her breaks from hospital stays, chemotherapy, and radiation Abigail participated in AYSO soccer, gymnastics at SCATS, and Sea Breeze basketball league.
– She was a talented artist
– She helped raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research by participating in the annual PCRF Reaching for the Cure Kids Run and shaving her dad’s head at the Seal Beach, CA St Baldrick’s Day event.
Despite all these accomplishments, and many more, what makes us the most proud is that she was the most loving, caring, and selfless person parents could ever ask for. We miss our beautiful daughter dearly. Day after day the memories we made with her make us smile, laugh, and cry. She left a lasting impression on all those she met and we are all better people for having had Abigail in our lives.
She truly was one of a kind.
