Newport Beach, Calif. – August 23, 2022 – The highly-anticipated 26th Anniversary Rod Carew Children’s Cancer Golf Classic, presented by Bank of America, will take place on Monday, August 29th, 2022, at the Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach, Calif. The tournament is co-hosted by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and Baseball Hall of Famer, Rod Carew.

The Golf Classic, held in honor of Rod’s late daughter Michelle who passed away from leukemia, is an annual event that raises funds for pediatric cancer research. More than 50% of cancer research relies on private philanthropic work and research due to lack of financial government contributions.

“Donations to pediatric cancer research have declined significantly during the past two years, making the Foundation’s work of funding research that accelerates breakthroughs even more urgent today,” said Jeri Wilson, Executive Director for PCRF. “With your help, monies raised from this tournament can help save more children battling cancer.”

This sell-out tournament will fill 2 full fields, with scheduled tee times and your choice of playing a Scramble or Shamble format. Players can expect to experience on-course contest holes, delicious food, and incredible swag offerings from the tournament’s elite product partners. Enjoy some food, drinks, online auction, and mingle with fellow players, Foundation members, and Rod Carew himself. Reserve your spot on the course today by registering or sponsoring online. If you are unable to attend in person, you can still support the PCRF and this event by participating in the auction virtually!

This year, Rod and the PCRF selected Steve Lavin as the Michelle Carew Spirit Honoree. A dedicated friend to PCRF for over 15 years, Steve Lavin has served as head coach for the men’s basketball teams at UCLA, St. John’s, and now San Diego. Lavin himself faced his own cancer diagnosis, has a family history of cancer, and has remained an advocate for childhood cancer research, Coach Lavin has helped PCRF and organizations alike to raise millions of dollars for lifesaving research.

“While these have been unusual times, I want to personally thank you for helping to keep your eye on the ball for pediatric cancer research,” said Rod Carew. “Funding research is even more vital today for our already immune-compromised kids. I thank you for your past support and hope you will join us on the course to celebrate 26 years of hard work and life-saving research.”

Since retirement, Rod spends much of his free time fundraising for research and cures for pediatric cancer. In the past twenty-five years, the Rod Carew Children’s Cancer Golf Classic has raised more than five million dollars for Pediatric Cancer Research.

The Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation identifies and invests in leading-edge research that demonstrates the best hope for curing childhood cancer. Founded in 1982 by physicians, parents, and community leaders, PCRF has raised over $54 million for cancer research since its inception. Because of research, the cancer death rate has dropped more dramatically for children than for any other age group. There has been considerable strides in the treatment, care, and prevention of pediatric cancer; however, there is still work to be done.
