Ryan was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma at 16 and became a patient of Dr. Cairo. He benefitted from Dr. Cairo’s investigational treatment and underwent six months of targeted immunotherapy. Ryan is flourishing today because of advances in cancer treatment, partially made possible by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. A recipient of our Survivor Scholarship, Ryan graduated with a civil engineering degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology. Today, this healthy 21-year-old is fulfilling his lifelong dream of being a civil engineer and is a living testament to research. In the past 40 years, treatment for Ryan’s cancer type has changed dramatically. Radiation has been replaced with immunotherapy and both chemotherapy and the total length of treatment have been reduced, achieving survival rates of greater than 95 percent today.
