Dr. Malhotra has focused her research on medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children under 10 years old. The cure rate is about 70%, but the survivors are beset with long-term devastating side effects ranging from behavioral to cognitive disorders. The need is to develop therapies that would target tumor cells specifically and not healthy cells in a patient, thus alleviating the need for generalized treatment regimes, which are harmful in the longer-run. Dr. Malhotra studies the mitochondria which are very sensitive entities living inside a cell. Through her research, she has demonstrated that mitochondria play an important role in mediating uncontrolled cell division in tumors. She is now directing her research to investigate avenues, including drugs and proteins, which would specifically target the mitochondria of tumor cells and arrest their growth to bring them back to the normal cell phenotype. Specific treatment strategies like these can bring a more normal life to children surviving medulloblastoma and improve their overall quality of life.
