After a year hiatus Rod Carew comes back strong for this Orange County favorite golf tournament.

The 22nd annual Rod Carew Children’s Golf Classic took place on August 28th at Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach. More than 60 sponsors, 290 golfers, and 80 volunteers joined together to raise funds and awareness to ultimately bring hope and lifesaving treatments to children battling cancer.

The Hall of Fame host, Rod Carew, made an enthusiastic return to the event after having missed last year’s tournament for the first time in over 2 decades. His return was felt far and wide as he greeted golfers with the perfect speech to set the tone for the entire event, “Thank you for supporting this special day, and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. You are helping save kids that are fighting just like my daughter did over 20 years ago. I may have lost a daughter, but every one of these kids that survives is one of my children now. These are my kids you are saving today.”

“The incredible success of this tournament has all been made possible because of the sponsors and donors that help us sell-out this tournament every year. Every dollar goes to help support our efforts to end pediatric cancers so children and their families can re-focus on the joys of childhood. With their help, we continue to push research forward to get us one step closer towards finding a cure,” said Jeri Wilson, Executive Director.

This year PCRF presented Rene Decker, of Powerstone Property Management, with the Michelle Carew Spirit Award. For over 20 years PCRF has given this award to outstanding individuals or corporations who have demonstrated a passion for the mission of PCRF, to improve the care, quality of life and survival rate of all children with cancer. It is most appropriate this award be named after Michelle Carew who became the inspiration for the tournament in 1996 when she lost her battle with pediatric cancer.

Decker is a community leader, business owner and philanthropist who has remained passionate about helping PCRF fund research for more than 7 years. With the support of his team, they have found creative ways to flex their business relationships and contacts to generate over $300,000 for PCRF thus far. This gift of relationships has translated to increased awareness for kids fighting this disease, and has allowed us to give more funds to lifesaving research. Rarely do we see individuals harness their resources to such an effective extent.

Every year, the event is in honor of Michelle Carew’s memory. In 1995, Michelle Carew was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at 17 years old. Through all of her chemotherapy and radiation, it was difficult to find a bone marrow donor. After exhausting all the treatment options available, Michelle died at the age of 18 years old. Since her passing, Rod Carew has been passionate about advocating for awareness and research dollars for pediatric cancer.
