Realizing Futures

If you don’t believe that one person can make a difference…think again! Take it from the members of Team Abigail who joined forces to help raise over $6,000 for pediatric cancer research. How did they do it? By Sweating for a Cure!

In July of 2014, seven-year-old Abigail Caplan-Jones was diagnosed with metastatic Ewings Undifferentiated Sarcoma. After having severe back pain and fatigue, multiple scans revealed the presence of tumors in her left chest cavity and near her spine. Abigail began a rigorous treatment process. Her treatment included: 42 weeks of chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation treatment, and 8 combined hours of various surgical procedures – a

mounting to 340 days of total treatment.

In June of 2015, after a long, hard, and courageous fight Abigail’s scans showed no evidence of disease and was declared in remission.

Unfortunately, in November of 2015 routine follow-up scans revealed that her cancer had returned. Faced with fighting cancer for the second time, Abigail went underwent new chemotherapy treatments and a clinical trial for immunotherapy. All of these treatments were unsuccessful as cancer became more aggressive, continued to grow, and spread throughout her body.

On May 22nd, 2016 at the age of 9, Abigail ended her battle with cancer.

In an effort to honor the happiness, kindness and love Abigail gave to so many in such a short time, team members joined together with Training for Warriors in Huntington Beach to host a “charity workout”. Friends and families of all ages attended Sweat for a Cure to raise money for research while enjoying a fun-filled day that included vendors, a silent auction and even a visit from Star Wars characters!

“Believe that what you do matters and you will make a difference in people’s lives. Abigail continues to live through all of us and has continued to inspire and raise awareness for pediatric cancer near and far,” said one member of their team.

Everyone has the power to make a difference.
