Realizing Futures

Leonard, Age 13
T-Cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia

There is not another kid that loves basketball more than Leonard. We’re not talking about the most popular player or Lakers-only fan. We mean the real deal – knows all the old school players, where players went to college, stats, old-school ABA, card collector, draft watching, love for the game basketball fanatic!

When he was diagnosed with Leukemia in December 2012 the thing that kept Leonard in high spirits were the many basketball DVDs he received from friends and family, Sports Center, and a visit from the UCLA Men’s Basketball Team. Leonard’s doing well on treatment and is looking forward to returning to school this fall.

He’s definitely had some setbacks, like when he broke his leg just days before his Make-A-Wish trip to meet Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. His spirits were crushed and it has been difficult watching Leonard not participate in his usual summer basketball league or just shoot around in the backyard. While he’s finally starting to get his strength back, he’s still not at 100% and continues in physical therapy to help build strength and confidence so that one day he can run, jump and practice dunking. We look forward to the day when Leonard is able to again play the sport he absolutely adores like no other.
